A Great Example: a statement about the peaceful transfer of power

A statement from the Notre Dame Sisters:

All of us have memories of past inaugurations and the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another. Today’s inauguration gave us a different experience of the transfer of power and a different view of the US Capitol setting. Yet peace and democracy prevailed. We thank all those involved in making this a peace-filled day. Now we move forward to deepen this peace for all people and to carry out the challenges President Biden put forth.

We Sisters work with people from different backgrounds day in and day out. We see neighbors and friends assisting each other through the COVID-19 pandemic. We see people from different racial and economic backgrounds praying together. We see hard-working people trying to make their communities brighter. We Sisters have trust in the American people to come together as children of God and begin loving one another and for seeing the truth and goodness of each person once again.

We join the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in renewing our commitment to the common good and taking up the challenge to use our energy to repair our democracy and contribute to the work of building a more perfect union.

We call on our leaders in the White House, Senate, and Congress to set an example of goodwill and deepening dialogue for the good of all, and to lead us into a time of critical national healing and display for us the best of what America can be.
