Joyce’s Journey Home to Notre Dame Housing
For Joyce Slezak, Notre Dame Housing wasn’t just a new place to live; it was a true homecoming. Born and raised in Omaha, Joyce spent years helping her family and supporting her grandchildren out of state. But her heart never left her hometown. When she returned to Omaha, Joyce remembered the warm impression she had of Notre Dame Housing after touring the newly built Building A years before. Moving in felt like coming home.
From her very first day, Joyce was struck by the friendliness of the community. “All the people I meet and continue to meet are friendly and welcoming,” she shares. It’s not only the people who create this sense of belonging, though—it’s the activities, spaces, and support systems available to everyone. With exercise equipment, a permanent food pantry, and a vibrant life enrichment center nestled among the four buildings, Joyce found opportunities to stay active and social right at her doorstep. She describes Notre Dame Housing as “busy, with lots of activities to choose from,” a place where she can engage in everything from music sessions to watercolor painting—all within a safe, welcoming environment.
Living in a varied community with people of different lifestyles and abilities has enriched Joyce’s daily life. She finds immense value in being part of a place that encourages personal growth and connection. Weekly lunches brought into the senior center are, as Joyce says, “a huge help.” Through these activities, Joyce has been able to nurture her skills, form new friendships, and find fresh perspectives.
To Joyce, a “welcoming heart” and an “open door” mean knowing that family, friends, and visitors are always embraced. It’s also the comfort of knowing that someone is always there to lend a hand, answer questions, and offer support. As she reflects on her experience, Joyce has a message for the supporters who make it all possible: “THANK YOU immensely and keep up your incredible work and help.”
Joyce’s story is just one of many lives touched by the generosity of donors who help the Sisters’ continue their mission of welcoming hearts and open doors to those in need.
