In Loving Memory of Sr. Mary Jo Hrnchir: A Life of Faith, Service, and Love
Sr. Mary Jo Hrnchir, a cherished Notre Dame Sister, was born on February 12, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas, the beloved daughter of Henry Hrnchir and Clyta Davis Hrnchir. With heavy hearts, we announce her peaceful passing on August 5, 2023, at the age of 80, surrounded by love.
Sr. Mary Jo’s life was one of profound purpose and unwavering faith. Her journey of faith led her to enroll at Notre Dame Academy for high school, where she developed a profound commitment to serving others. On August 13, 1961, she embraced her calling and professed her vows, embarking on a lifelong journey as a Notre Dame Sister.
A testament to her dedication, Sr. Mary Jo’s occupational path was one of compassion and care. She humbly served as a food service provider at Assumption Convent in Omaha, NE. Her service then extended to Notre Dame Academy, where she worked in the cafeteria. She began her career as a nursing assistant and medical aide, providing comfort and healing to countless individuals at Florence Nursing Home, Ville de Sante, Western Medical Services, and the House of Hope. Her occupation truly exemplified her devotion to humanity’s well-being.
Sr. Mary Jo was a sister, friend, and confidante to many. She is survived by her Notre Dame Sisters and her siblings: Eugene (Meredith) Hrnchir of Atwood, KS; Kathy Hrnchir Keflas of Cedar Park, Texas; Jane Hrnchir (Dale Michem) of McCook, NE; Zandra Hrnchir (Ron Carmichael) of Omaha, NE; Patricia Hrnchir of Lawrence, KS; Cheryl Hrnchir (sister-in-law) of Trenton, NE. She is also fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and all those who were touched by her warmth and kindness.
Sr. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her loving parents, Henry and Clyta Hrnchir, as well as her brothers Robert Hrnchir and Henry Hrnchir, Jr., and her sisters Zanetta Hrnchir Schnee and Donna Hrnchir Plourd. Their memories continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
Sr. Mary Jo’s final resting place is at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery in Atwood, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in Sr. Mary Jo’s name to the Notre Dame Sisters of Omaha, allowing her legacy of love, service, and faith to continue for generations to come.
As we say farewell to Sr. Mary Jo Hrnchir, let us remember her as a beacon of light, love, and unwavering faith. Her legacy of service will forever remain an inspiration to us all. May her soul find eternal rest, and her memory forever be a blessing to those whose lives she touched.
