Celebrating 70 Years of Devotion: Sr. Dorothy Rolf’s Jubilee with the Notre Dame Sisters

The Notre Dame Sisters announce the 70th jubilee celebration of Sr. Dorothy Rolf. Born on January 25, 1935, in West Point, NE, to John and Elizabeth (Drueke) Rolf, Sr. Dorothy has been an example of faith, service, and love throughout her notable journey.

Sr. Dorothy, a 1952 graduate of Notre Dame Academy, fondly recalls the influences that shaped her vocation. “As a student, I cherished the Notre Dame Sisters, the atmosphere, daily Mass, yearly retreats, and the companionship of my friends,” she shares. Her early experiences of prayer, whether driving the tractor or working in the garden, were deeply formative. Inspired by her parents’ unwavering faith and resilience despite family hardships, Sr. Dorothy felt a profound call to religious life.

In 1956, Sr. Dorothy began her ministry in elementary education, then teaching ten years at Aquinas High School in David City, NE. She later became an elementary school principal at Assumption School and St. Mary’s School in Omaha. Her leadership extended beyond the classroom as she served on the Notre Dame Leadership team for six years. She also provided spiritual direction and directed retreats for college students in Omaha, Kearney, Wayne State, and South Dakota for years. Her compassionate spirit was evident in her role as a hospital chaplain at Bergan, Immanuel, and Methodist hospitals, and as the Associate Leader for the Notre Dame Sisters’ Associates.

Sr. Dorothy retired in 2021. Reflecting on her ministry, she notes, “I loved all my ministries and service to the youth, high schoolers, college students, and people of all ages. Providing spiritual direction, leading retreats, and serving as a hospital chaplain for 20 years were profound experiences.”

A pivotal moment in Sr. Dorothy’s life underscores her deep faith. She remembers an impactful experience of God’s empowering love. While teaching high school, she was asked to attend a conference with three of her fellow Sisters.  She felt a strong urge not to join them on this trip, despite their encouragement.  The Sisters were disappointed, but Sr. Dorothy was at peace with her decision.  On their way to the conference, tragically, the Sisters were killed in a car accident. “God’s loving presence carried me through those sorrowful days with gratitude and taught me to listen to the movements of the Spirit in my life.”

Sr. Dorothy’s life is a testament to her deep gratitude to God, her family, and her fellow Sisters who empowered her to grow and take on new ministries. Sr. Dorothy encourages young people to be attentive to what draws them to God, to generosity, kindness, and concern for others. Above all, she hopes young people are inspired to take time to pray and seek God’s guidance.

As we celebrate Sr. Dorothy’s 70 years of unwavering dedication, we honor her remarkable contributions. Her journey of faith and service continues to inspire and uplift our community.
