Reflection for 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time…October 6, 2024

Genesis 2:18-24

Naming was very important to the ancients so our loving God had the first man name everything!  But God completed Adam’s efforts by creating Eve from Adam.  This is a fundamental touchstone for reflecting on the theological nature, meaning and purpose and goal of humanity and one of its most fundamental  institutions, marriage.

The second reading is from Hebrews 2:9-11:  Christology here focuses on Jesus’ humanity, how he became fully human and suffered for the sake of our salvation…a little lower than the angels.  When I reflect on this I am so very, very humbled that Jesus came from Heavenly companionship and beauty beyond words to endure what he did for all of us.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark:  Man and woman are one Jesus shows the full depth and meaning of the bond of marriage and then the little children come to him and some people rebuked them, but Jesus says one of my favorite heart verses in our precious Bible;   “…do not prevent them,  because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”  Amen, I say to you whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”

Reflection:  Who of us has not felt the loving trust of a child who runs to us in perfect trust and we feel the love and are content and joyful.  I believe that is how God wants us to flee to him with unconditional trust and love?
