Reflection for the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 13, 2023
by Sr Mary Hlas ND
Most people have a favorite scripture passage: today’s first reading from 1st Kings is one of mine.
When the Lord told Elijah to stand on the mountain where the Lord would be passing by, he did. A strong wind was blowing there. The Lord was NOT in the wind. Then came an earthquake but the Lord was NOT in the earthquake. A fire burst forth but the Lord was NOT in the fire. It was a tiny, whispering sound which let Elijah know that the Lord was passing by.
In my life too, I most often hear our Lord’s gentle, whispering voice in my quiet times of prayer. I know that He is not only “passing by” but that HE is in my heart.
