Reflection for the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2024

“Prepare the way of the Lord.”

The second Sunday of Advent causes the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to be moved to Monday this year, but in considering them both, I suggest listening to the Sunday readings through Mary’s ears.

From Baruch she hears, “For God will show all the earth your splendor:  you will be named by God forever, the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship.” Belonging to God’s people, you take these words personally, “Mary, God will show all the earth your splendor…” and you give glory to God as you realize that, yes, “All ages shall call me blessed.”

Paul, in the second reading, prays “…that your love may increase…so that you may be pure and blameless…” I imagine Mary’s gratefulness to God for the gift of an ever-growing love and discernment that results in purity and being “filled with the fruit of righteousness.”

Finally, Luke tells about John going throughout the region of the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, preaching about valleys being raised up and mountains made low. This is an echo of Mary’s Magnificat where the lowly are lifted up and the rich sent away empty. In God’s reign no one is above or below anyone else; all are equally beloved.

As we prepare to celebrate the Incarnation, let’s make an extra effort to join Mary and John in living as though these readings are about us and as though God’s reign is already here. — Because they are, and it is!!!
