Reflection for the 6th Sunday in Ordinary time…Feb 13, 2022

Blessedness is the theme of today’s readings.  The first reading from Jeremiah paints a vivid picture of the difference between the person who puts his trust in others vs. the person who trusts in or relies on the Lord.  “Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh…He is like a barren bush in the desert.”  Not a pretty picture.

On the other hand, Jeremiah teaches “Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord…He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream.”  The tree that sinks its roots down until it reaches water is able to produce good fruit even in the dry seasons.  He goes on to say that those who trust in the Lord will be able to withstand the rough times ahead.  God gives us the means to continue and thrive in challenging situations. “…its leaves stay green.”

We are all familiar with the passage in which Jesus reveals the Beatitudes.  Jesus is describing the characteristics of a person whose trust is rooted in God; who is focused on others; who is living a life of hope.  It is not always an easy life. However, it is a meaningful life.  One that leads to eternal reward.

“Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit.” (CCC 1817)
