Reflection for the Third Sunday of Lent…March 12, 2023
by Theresa Wiggs, Notre Dame Associate
In this Sunday’s gospel we hear the story of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. The woman came to gather water during the hottest part of the day in order to avoid seeing other women who judged her because of her reputation. When Jesus asked her for a drink of water she was surprised because Jewish people usually shunned Samaritans. Yet, Jesus spoke to her with kindness and mercy. He offered her hope for eternal life.
The Samaritan woman was so moved by Jesus’ words that she went to tell others. Many people returned with her to listen to Jesus and they too began to believe in him.
Let us reflect on this gift of Living Water our faith offers to us. God is “thirsting” for us to put our trust in His boundless grace and mercy. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit fill us with this blessing.
